A new CBS News poll released Sunday indicates that President Donald Trump has reached his highest approval rating across both of his terms, with 53% of voters approving of his leadership just weeks into his second term.
The survey highlights that a majority of Americans believe Trump is delivering on his campaign promises, particularly on issues like immigration enforcement, foreign policy, and government efficiency.
On CBS’s Face the Nation, host Margaret Brennan discussed the findings with Anthony Salvanto, CBS News Elections and Surveys Executive Director.

“I will keep it simple, Margaret. He’s doing, in the eyes of the public, what he said he would do in the campaign. There’s political value in that. In fact, 70% of people say he’s doing what he promised. That’s whether they approve of him or not,” Salvanto explained.

Additionally, 49% of respondents said Trump is accomplishing more than expected, while 41% said he is meeting expectations. Only 9% believe he is doing less than they anticipated.
Trump received 59% approval for his crackdown on criminal illegal immigrants, a key focus of his second-term agenda. However, some respondents voiced concern about the administration’s handling of inflation and consumer prices.
According to the poll:
- 66% said the administration is not focusing enough on lowering prices.
- 31% said Trump is doing the right amount to address economic concerns.
- 3% said the administration is too focused on lowering prices.
Respondents were divided on price trends:
- 47% said prices in general are increasing.
- 41% said prices have stayed the same.
- 33% reported that their gas prices had gone up, while 41% saw no change.
- 63% said egg prices had increased, while 23% said they remained steady.
Trump also received a 54% approval rating for his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict, with 46% disapproving.
On Tuesday evening, Trump appeared alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a press conference after their meeting on the ongoing war in the Middle East.
During the event, Trump surprised reporters by announcing that the U.S. was planning to “take over” the Gaza Strip in an effort to create stability for Palestinians seeking peace.
The proposal drew mixed reactions:
- 47% of respondents said it was a bad idea.
- 40% said they were unsure.
- 13% believed it was a good idea.
Awareness of Trump’s comments varied, with only 28% of respondents saying they had read “a lot” about his remarks, while 38% had seen “some” coverage, 23% had read “not much,” and 11% had heard “nothing at all.”
As Trump’s second term moves forward, the poll indicates that the majority of Americans see him as an active and effective leader, despite ongoing debates over his economic and foreign policy decisions.
